PECO Responds to Severe Damage from Major Wind and Rain Storm

PECO Storm Update: January 11, 2024, 8 a.m.

  • PECO continues to respond to the severe damage caused by the major wind and rain storm experienced across the region on Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. Sustained high winds and wind gusts paired with significant rainfall and saturated ground brought down trees and tree branches and caused extensive damage to electric equipment.
  • More than 230,000 PECO customers had electric service impacted over the course of the extended storm, and more than 87 percent of those customers impacted have been restored in less than 24 hours. The most heavily concentrated damage occurred in Chester County.
  • PECO’s Emergency Response Organization remains activated and all available personnel are responding to restore service safely and as quickly as possible. Following the aftermath of this significant weather event, PECO crews, with the assistance of additional employees and contractors outside of the region, continue to work to restore power.
  • In addition, we are monitoring weather forecasted to impact the region on Friday and Saturday. We are prepared for this event and have enhanced our staffing plans to ensure necessary resources are available to respond for our customers.
  • As of 8 a.m., approximately 12,000 customers are without service.
    • Bucks County = 400
    • Chester County = 6,800
    • Delaware County = 3,400
    • Montgomery County = 1,000
    • Philadelphia = 100
    • York = 140

Estimated Restoration Timeline

  • We anticipate that we’ll be able to restore the vast majority of customers who are currently without power due to the storm within the next 24 hours. For some customers, restoration work may continue into Saturday due to the severity of the damage.
  • Crews are assessing damage as they make repairs, and individual estimates can change based on restoration progress and the extent of damage crews find.
  • Customers can access their account information, report an outage, and stay up to date on their restoration status through the PECO mobile app or on www.peco.com
  • PECO crews, contractors, and support personnel will continue to work around the clock until all damage has been repaired and all service has been restored.

Mutual Assistance

  • In addition to our dedicated PECO crews, we have an additional 1,000 field personnel, including local contractors and mutual assistance crews from other utility companies who have already, or will soon join alongside our PECO personnel. These crews are joining us from Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, New York, and North Carolina.
  • These crew members will continue to work 12- to 16-hour shifts alongside PECO crew members to repair the extensive damage on the electric system.

Stay Safe

  • Always stay away from damaged electric equipment, especially downed power lines and tree limbs that may come into contact with power lines. Call PECO at 1-800-841-4141 to report any downed equipment.
