29th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count

GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT

Join the Great Backyard Bird Count, February 13–16!

During these four days, bird lovers of all ages are invited to watch and count birds in their backyard, neighborhood, or favorite outdoor spot, then report what they see. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations ahead of their annual migration.

Started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count is now a worldwide community science project supported by Birds Canada and eBird—proof that every bird (and every observer) counts. Learn more about this event on their website.

DID YOU KNOW? SHEDS, FENCES, ENTRY GATES & MORE

Sheds, fences, and similar residential structures often require zoning approval before installation. Some structures, like entry gates on residential driveways, may even impact first responders ability to access your home. Even small structures must meet setbacks, height, and placement requirements to avoid impacts on neighboring properties or utilities. Some projects may require a zoning permit even if a building permit is not needed.

Checking with the Township before purchasing or installing a structure can prevent costly changes later. Have questions? Please call at 610-388-1300 or email at kmorgenstern@kennett.pa.us

Katelynn Morgenstern, PP, AICP, Director of Planning & Zoning

The Planning Brief is a new twice-monthly feature in the Township Enews designed to provide residents and property owners with clear, practical information about planning, zoning, permitting, and property maintenance requirements. The goal of The Planning Brief is to share proactive guidance, answer common questions, and help residents understand applicable rules before issues arise—supporting informed decision-making and consistent expectations across the Township.

CORRECT AMOUNT OF SALT TO USE

WHAT'S THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF SALT?

A little salt goes a long way. Being a “smart salter” helps keep walkways safe while protecting our streams and environment.

Always shovel first to clear snow before it turns to ice. When salting, remember that one 12-ounce mug of salt is enough to treat a 20-foot driveway or about 10 sidewalk squares—more salt doesn’t mean more safety. After conditions improve, sweep up any excess salt and reuse it.

Using the right amount saves money, protects water quality, and keeps our community safe all winter long.  Additional information can be found on the SALT WATCH-IZAAK WALTON LEAGUE OF AMERICA website.
